The disc is composed of an outer portion called the anulus and a semi-liquid portion called the nucleus.

The function of the disk is to dampen motion at the facet joints.  This allows your trunk to be flexible.  A shock absorber on a car dampens motion at your wheels, that is it allows some motion but not too much.   Unfortunately discs can be injured or worn out.
